An iron main gate design is still the first choice for most Indian homes, because MS (mild steel) is strong, easy to weld and easy to repair in any town. Every picture below is an original loha gate idea with its size, sections, finish and a short note you can show your fabricator.
When people say iron today, they nearly always mean MS: square tube, flat strip, pipe and sheet. MS rusts if primer is skipped, so the notes below cover primer, drain gaps and capped pipe ends as much as looks.
If you are still choosing a material, compare these with steel main gate designs, wooden gates and CNC laser cut gates. For width and height, see main gate designs by size.
Classic Main Gate Design Iron with MS Bars
Bar gates are the oldest loha main gate design and still the easiest to build and repair. A good MS main gate design keeps bar gaps under 4 inches so a small pet or a goat cannot squeeze through.

| Size | 10 x 6 ft, double |
|---|---|
| Material | MS 50x50 frame, 20 bars |
| Finish | Black PU, gold tips |
Straight vertical bars with gold spear tips read clean from the road and suit a two storey house with a plain plastered wall.
Fabricator tip: Ask for 20 mm square bars at 4 inch gaps, welded both sides, and a middle stopper in the floor.

| Size | 12 x 7 ft, double |
|---|---|
| Material | MS 40x40 box, 16 mm bars |
| Finish | Dark grey matte |
Two mid rails break the long bars into neat bands and stop them from bending. A calm choice for a modern grey and white home.
Fabricator tip: Weld rails at one third and two thirds height so long bars stay straight; use three hinges per leaf.
MS Main Gate Design with Sheet Panels and Privacy Top
Sheet panels give privacy and keep dust off the porch. On a main gate design for home in iron, a sheet top above eye level is the most asked for change after bars.

| Size | 11 x 7 ft, double |
|---|---|
| Material | MS box frame, 16 g sheet |
| Finish | Brown PU, matte |
Full sheet leaves block the view from the road completely. Pressed groove lines stop the sheet from looking flat and hide small dents.
Fabricator tip: Use 16 gauge sheet on a 40x40 frame with inner bracing every 2 ft so the sheet does not drum.

| Size | 10 x 7 ft, double |
|---|---|
| Material | MS 40x40 box + sheet |
| Finish | Off-white, black bars |
Bars at the bottom let air and light in, while the sheet band at head height blocks the view into the porch. Good for corner plots.
Fabricator tip: Keep the sheet band 2 ft deep starting at 4.5 ft height; add a drip edge on top.

| Size | 12 x 7 ft, double |
|---|---|
| Material | MS frame, 18 g louvers |
| Finish | Teal blue, satin |
Angled louvers block a straight view but let air pass, so the gate does not act like a sail in strong wind. A smart pick for open plots.
Fabricator tip: Ask for 45 degree louvers at 3 inch pitch, welded at both ends, and a 2 inch drain gap at the bottom.
Pipe Main Gate Design: Round and Square Pipe Gates
A pipe main gate design is lighter than solid bars and costs less per running foot. A square pipe main gate design also looks more modern than round pipe.

| Size | 12 x 6.5 ft, double |
|---|---|
| Material | MS 50x25 pipe slats |
| Finish | Charcoal PU matte |
Flat horizontal pipe slats with even gaps give a clean modern face. They suit a box shaped house with large windows.
Fabricator tip: Use 50x25 rectangular pipe at 1.5 inch gaps, all ends capped so water does not collect inside.

| Size | 14 x 6 ft, double |
|---|---|
| Material | MS 1.5 in round pipe |
| Finish | Silver aluminium paint |
A simple grid of round pipes is strong and cheap to repair. It fits a farm house entrance where tractors need a wide clear opening.
Fabricator tip: Ask for 1.5 inch medium class pipe, a diagonal brace in each leaf and a drop bolt for the open position.

| Size | 10 x 6.5 ft, double |
|---|---|
| Material | MS 40x20 + 25x25 pipe |
| Finish | Grey + wood texture |
Pipes of two widths in a random rhythm look custom without any cutting work. A thin wood finish strip at the top warms up the grey.
Fabricator tip: Mark the pipe rhythm on the floor first and copy it on both leaves; seal pipe ends with welded caps.
Wrought Iron Main Gate Design with Scrolls and Flowers
Scroll and flower work was once forged by hand. Today most wrought iron main gate design work uses ready MS scrolls and cast pieces welded into a bar frame.

| Size | 12 x 7 ft, double |
|---|---|
| Material | MS bars + MS scrolls |
| Finish | Black, gold collars |
Paired C scrolls under a straight top rail give a classic look without heavy cost. It suits a bungalow with white columns.
Fabricator tip: Weld every scroll at two points at least and grind joints smooth before primer so rust cannot start there.

| Size | 10 x 6.5 ft, double |
|---|---|
| Material | MS frame, cast flowers |
| Finish | Maroon, gold petals |
Cast iron flower pieces set inside square panels bring colour when the petals are picked out in gold. Best on a traditional house.
Fabricator tip: Fix cast flowers with full fillet welds; ask the painter to hand brush gold only after the top coat dries.

| Size | 14 x 8 ft, double |
|---|---|
| Material | MS 50x50 frame + scrolls |
| Finish | Dark bronze PU |
A raised scroll crown over the meeting point of two leaves adds height and a grand entry feel. Keep the lower part simple.
Fabricator tip: A crown adds weight to the free end; use heavy duty ball bearing hinges and a wheel under each leaf.
Simple Iron Main Gate Design for Home
Simple gates use less steel, weld faster and are easy to repaint. A plain main gate design iron for home also ages well. For more budget ideas see simple low cost main gates.

| Size | 8 x 6 ft, double |
|---|---|
| Material | MS 25x5 flat strips |
| Finish | Sky blue enamel |
A plain grid of flat MS strips is quick to make and easy to paint. It fits a small row house where the gate is used every day.
Fabricator tip: Ask for 25x5 mm flats on a 40x40 frame, red oxide primer inside and out, and a floor stopper.

| Size | 5 x 6.5 ft, single |
|---|---|
| Material | MS 40x40 box, 16 mm bars |
| Finish | Black satin |
One leaf hung on one strong pillar saves space on a narrow plot. This main gate iron door design opens fully against the side wall.
Fabricator tip: A single wide leaf sags; ask for a diagonal brace, three hinges and a small wheel at the free end.

| Size | 9 x 6 ft, double |
|---|---|
| Material | MS box + 18 g sheet |
| Finish | Cream, brown bottom |
A sheet bottom stops leaves, plastic and small animals from coming under the gate. Simple, low maintenance and easy to repaint.
Fabricator tip: Keep a 50 mm gap under the sheet for water to drain and rust proof the bottom rail with zinc primer.
How to Choose a Metal Main Gate Design for Home
A good metal main gate design answers four questions first.
- Width: 8 to 10 ft clear for a bike and a small car, 10 to 12 ft for an SUV with room to turn, 12 to 14 ft for a tractor.
- Privacy: open bars for a quiet lane, a sheet top or louvers for a busy road or a corner plot.
- Weight: heavy sheet and scroll gates need strong pillars with RCC columns inside and three hinges per leaf. Light pipe gates can hang on two.
- Opening: swing gates should open inward to the plot, never onto the road. If the driveway is short, look at sliding and folding gates.
Sections, Sheet Gauge and Cost of an MS Gate
| Part | Usual choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Outer frame | MS box 40x40 or 50x50 mm, 2 to 3 mm wall | Carries the weight to the hinges |
| Bars | 16 or 20 mm square, or 25x25 pipe | Thin bars bend, thick bars add weight |
| Slats | MS 50x25 or 40x20 pipe | Clean modern look |
| Sheet | 16 gauge for gates, 18 gauge for small panels | Thinner sheet dents and drums |
| Hinges | Ball bearing or heavy pin hinges, 3 per tall leaf | Stops sagging |
Cost is worked out by weight. The fabricator weighs or estimates the finished steel and multiplies it by his rate per kg, then adds primer and paint, hinges, wheels, lock, fitting and transport. Ask for this breakup in writing. Full details are in the main gate price guide.
Rust and Paint Care for a Loha Gate
Most iron gates fail at the bottom rail and at welded joints. Ask for grinding of every joint, one coat of red oxide or zinc primer on all sides before fitting, and two top coats. PU paint lasts longer in sun than plain enamel. Near the sea, use zinc rich primer and repaint every two to three years. Keep a 50 mm gap at the bottom so rainwater drains away, and clean mud off the wheels and track before each monsoon.
Main gate questions
Which is better for a main gate, iron or steel?
MS iron is cheaper, easy to weld and easy to repair, but it needs primer and repainting. SS 304 does not rust and needs little care, but it costs more and only a few shops weld it well. For a painted, heavy gate, MS is the usual choice.
What section size is used in an MS main gate design?
Most home gates use a 40x40 or 50x50 mm MS box for the frame with 16 or 20 mm square bars or 50x25 mm pipe inside.
How is the cost of a lohe ka main gate design worked out?
The fabricator works out the total weight of steel and multiplies it by his rate per kg. Then he adds paint, hinges, wheels, lock, fitting and transport.
Is a pipe main gate design strong enough for a house?
Yes, if the pipe wall is thick enough. Ask for medium class round pipe or 2 mm wall square pipe, a diagonal brace in each leaf and capped ends. Thin pipe dents and rusts from inside.
How do I add privacy to an iron gate without making it heavy?
Add a sheet band only at head height, or use angled louvers. Both block the view while keeping weight and wind load lower than a full sheet gate.
How often should an iron main gate be painted?
Inland, every three to four years is usual. Near the sea or in heavy rain areas, every two to three years. Touch up scratches early.
