An 8 feet main gate design is the most common size for a town house, because 8 ft clear width takes a small car and a couple of bikes. But plots differ, so this page groups gates by width, from a 4 ft walk-in gate to a 16 ft folding gate.

Every picture lists the width, height and leaf type. Width here means the clear opening between pillars, not the plot front. Measure the car you have, add at least 2 ft for safe turning, and then add the pillars on each side.

For styles, see the iron main gate designs and double door main gates. If you only need a gate for the front door, look at grill gates for the main door.

4 to 5 Feet Main Gate Design for Walk-In Entry

An iron gate 4 feet main gate design is for walking in, pushing a cycle or as a wicket next to a car gate. These 5 feet main gate design photos also work for a scooter if the ramp is gentle.

Iron gate 4 feet main gate design with a single leaf and vertical bars
Size4 x 6.5 ft, single
MaterialMS 40x40 box, 16 mm bars
FinishBlack PU, gold knobs

A single 4 ft leaf beside a wide car gate means you do not open the big gate every time you step out for milk.

Fabricator tip: Hang on two heavy pin hinges with a self closing spring; fit a drop latch at waist height.

Double door iron gate 4 feet main gate design with two narrow leaves
Size4 x 6 ft, double
MaterialMS 25x25 pipe + flats
FinishIvory, brown trim

This double door iron gate 4 feet main gate design splits into two 2 ft leaves, so each one swings clear inside a tight front yard.

Fabricator tip: Two narrow leaves need a centre floor stopper and a tower bolt on one leaf so the pair locks firm.

Double door 5 feet main gate design with a sheet top panel in maroon
Size5 x 7 ft, double
MaterialMS box + 18 g sheet
FinishMaroon, gold lines

A double door 5 feet main gate design takes a scooter and a handcart. The sheet top gives privacy to a ground floor sitting area.

Fabricator tip: Keep the sheet top 18 gauge on a braced frame and leave a 50 mm drain gap under both leaves.

6 to 7 Feet Main Gate Design Iron, Including the 77 Gate

A 6 feet main gate design iron gate is right for bikes and a cycle, but tight for a car. A 7 x 7 ft gate, often called a 77 gate, fits two bikes side by side with room for a small cart.

6 feet main gate design with a double leaf flat bar grid in grey
Size6 x 6 ft, double
MaterialMS 40x40 box, 25x5 flats
FinishGrey, black edges

Two 3 ft leaves keep the swing short, which helps when the porch is shallow. Good for a bike parking front yard.

Fabricator tip: Ask for a floor stopper at the centre and hinges welded to plates bolted into the pillar.

Iron main gate design 6 x 7 ft with vertical pipes and a wood strip
Size6 x 7 ft, double
MaterialMS 40x20 pipe
FinishBlack + wood texture

At 7 ft tall, a 6 ft gate looks taller than it is wide, so a horizontal wood strip at mid height balances it.

Fabricator tip: Weld the wood texture strip as a 50x25 pipe painted in wood finish; seal both pipe ends.

77 main gate design iron, a 7 x 7 ft square gate with panels
Size7 x 7 ft, double
MaterialMS 50x50, 20 mm bars
FinishDark green, gold caps

A square 7 x 7 ft gate looks balanced from the road. Square panels repeat that shape and suit a compact two storey house.

Fabricator tip: A 7 ft tall gate catches wind; ask for three hinges per leaf and RCC columns inside the pillars.

8 Feet Main Gate Design Iron for Bike and Small Car

These 8 feet main gate design photos show the most common home gate width in towns. 8 ft clear fits a small car with bikes parked to one side, and two 4 ft leaves swing easily.

8 feet main gate design with horizontal MS slats in white for a small car
Size8 x 6 ft, double
MaterialMS 50x25 pipe slats
FinishWhite PU, matte

Horizontal slats make a narrow 8 ft gate look wider. A good fit for a new house with a single car and bikes.

Fabricator tip: Space slats at 1 inch gaps and add one hidden vertical brace inside each leaf so slats stay level.

8 x 8 ft iron main gate design with bars below and a sheet top
Size8 x 8 ft, double
MaterialMS 50x50 frame + sheet
FinishTeal, black bars

An 8 x 8 ft gate gives full height privacy at the top while the lower bars keep the porch airy.

Fabricator tip: A tall leaf needs three hinges, a bottom wheel on each leaf and a curved track mark on the floor.

8 feet main gate design iron sliding gate on a floor track
Size8 x 6 ft, sliding
MaterialMS 40x40 box, 20 mm bars
FinishGrey, silver tips

Where the driveway is short, an 8 ft sliding gate saves the space a swing gate needs. It needs a clear wall run beside it.

Fabricator tip: Ask for V groove wheels on an angle track, a top guide roller, and a 9 ft clear wall for the run.

10 Feet Main Gate Design for a Car with Room to Turn

A 10 feet main gate design gives an SUV space to turn in from a narrow road. On a 30 ft wide plot, 10 ft is the safe width for a car gate.

10 feet main gate design with a wicket door built into one leaf
Size10 x 7 ft, double
MaterialMS 50x50 box + bars
FinishBlack, gold tips

A wicket door inside the right leaf lets you walk in without opening the full 10 ft. The car leaf stays shut most of the day.

Fabricator tip: Frame the wicket in 40x40 box with its own hinges and lock; brace the big leaf around it.

10 x 8 ft main gate design with angled louver panels in brown
Size10 x 8 ft, double
MaterialMS frame, 18 g louvers
FinishBrown PU, satin

Louvers on a tall 10 x 8 ft gate keep the house private but let wind pass through, so the leaves feel lighter on the hinges.

Fabricator tip: Keep louvers at 3 inch pitch and add a bottom wheel on each leaf to take load off the hinges.

10 feet main gate design with mixed vertical pipes for a modern home
Size10 x 6.5 ft, double
MaterialMS 40x20 + 25x25 pipe
FinishGrey, dark grey frame

Pipes of two sizes in an uneven rhythm give a 10 ft gate a light, modern look without any cutting work.

Fabricator tip: Mark the pipe rhythm once and repeat it mirrored on the second leaf so the centre lines up.

12 Feet Main Gate Design and Wider Gates

A 12 feet main gate design suits a corner plot, two cars, or a farm road. At 14 ft and above, a sliding or folding gate is often easier than two huge swing leaves. See sliding and folding gates.

12 feet main gate design for home with bars and a sheet bottom
Size12 x 7 ft, double
MaterialMS 50x50 box, 16 mm bars
FinishDark blue, grey sheet

Two 6 ft leaves are heavy, so this simple 12 ft design keeps bars light and puts a sheet only at the bottom.

Fabricator tip: Each 6 ft leaf needs three ball bearing hinges, a bottom wheel and a drop bolt for the open position.

14 feet main gate design iron for a farm house with diagonal braces
Size14 x 6 ft, double
MaterialMS 2 in round pipe
FinishSilver aluminium

A 14 ft opening lets a tractor turn in from a village road. Diagonal braces keep the long leaves from sagging.

Fabricator tip: Use medium class pipe, a diagonal brace in each leaf, a wheel at the free end and a centre stopper.

16 feet main gate design with four folding leaves for a wide entry
Size16 x 7 ft, 4-leaf fold
MaterialMS 40x40 box, 20 mm bars
FinishBlack, bronze caps

Four leaves that fold in pairs need far less swing room than two 8 ft leaves. Good for a bungalow with a short front yard.

Fabricator tip: Ask for piano hinges between folding leaves, a wheel under each fold and a floor guide channel.

Which Gate Width Fits a Bike, Car or SUV

UseClear widthUsual height
Walk-in or wicket3 to 4 ft6 to 7 ft
Bikes, cycle, scooter5 to 7 ft6 to 7 ft
Bike and small car8 to 10 ft6 to 7 ft
SUV with room to turn10 to 12 ft6 to 8 ft
Village, tractor12 to 14 ft6 to 8 ft

If the road outside is narrow, add 1 to 2 ft to these widths, because the car enters at an angle. Main door grill gates are a separate size: about 3 to 3.5 ft for one leaf and 4 to 5 ft for two, 7 ft high.

What to Tell the Fabricator About Size

  • Give the clear width between finished pillars, not the brick gap. Plaster and tiles take 1 to 2 inches each side.
  • Swing gates open inward. Check that each leaf clears the ramp and the porch step when open.
  • Up to 10 ft, two leaves on two hinges each are fine. Above 10 ft or above 7 ft tall, ask for three hinges per leaf and a wheel under each leaf.
  • For a sliding gate, you need a clear wall run a little longer than the gate on one side.
  • Leave a 50 mm gap at the bottom for water, and slope the driveway away from the gate.

Cost grows with size because weight grows. The fabricator multiplies the steel weight by his rate per kg and adds paint, hinges, wheels, lock and fitting. The main gate price guide shows how to check this.

Main gate questions

What does "77 main gate design iron" mean?

It is a short way of saying a 7 x 7 ft iron gate, 7 ft wide and 7 ft tall. Fabricators also write 7 8 or 8 7 for 7 x 8 ft. Always confirm which number is width and which is height.

Is an 8 feet main gate wide enough for a car?

An 8 ft clear opening takes a small car if the road outside is wide and you drive in straight. For an SUV or a narrow lane, go for 10 ft.

Which is better, a 6 feet main gate design or 7 feet?

Both fit bikes. 7 ft gives room to park two bikes side by side or wheel in a handcart. If you may buy a car later, leave space for a wider 10 ft gate.

How tall should a 12 feet main gate design be?

Most 12 ft gates are 6 to 8 ft tall. Taller leaves catch more wind, so use a heavier frame, three hinges and a bottom wheel per leaf.

Should a 5 feet main gate design be single or double door?

A single 5 ft leaf needs a long swing and tends to sag. Two 2.5 ft leaves swing in less space and stay straight longer. Choose single only if you have a deep front yard.

What width is best for a 14 feet or 16 feet main gate?

At 14 ft and above, two swing leaves become heavy and need lots of yard. A sliding gate or a four leaf folding gate is usually easier to use and lasts longer.
