A strong main gate pillar design holds the gate straight for years and sets the look of the whole entrance. The pillar takes the gate's weight on its hinges, so the core matters as much as the cladding.
This page shows main gate pillar design images in tiles, granite, stone and plain plaster, with pillar tops and lights. Each picture lists the size, build and finish, plus a note for your mason or fabricator.
Read the size and footing table below the gallery before you start. To pick the gate itself, browse the iron main gate and steel main gate pages.
Main Gate Pillar Tiles Design
Tiles are the quickest way to finish a pillar. Use outdoor grade vitrified or porcelain tiles with a matt or textured face, never glossy floor tiles. Most main gate pillar tiles design in India now uses large format tiles because they are easy to wash. The main gate pillar tiles design images below show three looks, from modern grey to marble white. Match them to the gate wall tiles for a joined-up look.

| Size | 2 x 2 ft, 7 ft tall |
|---|---|
| Material | RCC + 600x1200 tiles |
| Finish | Matt grey, wood strip |
Large grey tiles with thin wood look strips give a calm modern pillar. Suits a flat roof house with a grey or wood gate.
Fabricator tip: Fix outdoor tiles with polymer tile adhesive, not plain cement, and leave 3 mm grout joints.

| Size | 18 x 18 in, 6.5 ft |
|---|---|
| Material | RCC + 300x600 tiles |
| Finish | Beige matt, black base |
Beige hides dust and the black band at the base takes mud splashes from rain. Good for a road side house.
Fabricator tip: Start the dark band from ground level up to 1 ft so splash marks stay hidden.

| Size | 2 x 2 ft, 7 ft tall |
|---|---|
| Material | RCC + 800x800 tiles |
| Finish | White marble look, gold |
Marble look tiles with a fine gold trim look rich without the cost of real marble. Suits a white bungalow with a black and gold gate.
Fabricator tip: Ask for SS gold finish edge trims at the corners; tile corners chip if left bare.
Main Gate Granite Pillar Design
Granite is hard, does not fade and is easy to clean. Black, grey and brown granites suit most gates. A main gate pillar granite design costs more than tiles but last for decades with no care beyond a wash.

| Size | 2 x 2 ft, 7 ft tall |
|---|---|
| Material | RCC + 18mm granite |
| Finish | Black, polished |
Polished black granite reflects light and looks sharp next to a steel or black gate. Keep a lamp on top to light the gate at night.
Fabricator tip: Fix granite with SS clamps as well as adhesive on tall pillars so slabs cannot slip.
Modern Main Gate Pillar Design and Pillar Top Design
A modern pillar uses clean shapes, mixed materials and a flat or stepped top. The pillar top design decides how the whole gate looks from the road. Pair these with an arch or chajja if you want a covered entry.

| Size | 15 x 15 in, 8 ft tall |
|---|---|
| Material | RCC + HPL wood panel |
| Finish | White, wood inlay |
A slim tall column with a wood panel inlay looks light and modern. It suits a narrow plot where wide pillars would eat space.
Fabricator tip: Slim pillars still need four 12 mm bars and a deep footing; do not reduce steel to save width.

| Size | 18 x 18 in, 6 ft |
|---|---|
| Material | Brick + plaster cap |
| Finish | Cream paint |
A stepped cap throws rain off the pillar and stops the dark streaks you see on flat tops. Good for a plastered pillar on a budget.
Fabricator tip: Give the cap a 2 inch overhang with a drip groove under it so water drops clear of the wall.
Main Gate Pillar Light Design and Simple Plastered Pillars
Lights on the pillar help you find the lock at night and make the house easier to spot. If the budget is tight, a simple plastered pillar with a good cap still looks neat. See lamps and fittings on the gate light, lock and handle page.

| Size | 2 x 2 ft, 7 ft tall |
|---|---|
| Material | RCC + texture plaster |
| Finish | Grey, black light |
Up down lights wash the pillar face and look modern. Keep them on the outer face so the gate does not hit them.
Fabricator tip: Ask for IP65 outdoor fittings and run wires in a pipe cast inside the pillar.

| Size | 2 x 2 ft, 7 ft tall |
|---|---|
| Material | RCC + stone tile |
| Finish | Sandstone, warm LED |
A lit niche in the pillar makes room for a name plate and a soft glow. It suits a modern home with a stone front.
Fabricator tip: Plan the niche size with the name plate before casting, and slope its base outward.

| Size | 15 x 15 in, 6 ft |
|---|---|
| Material | Brick + cement plaster |
| Finish | Off white, maroon band |
A plain plastered pillar with one painted band looks tidy and costs little. Good for village homes and rented plots.
Fabricator tip: Use 1:4 cement plaster with waterproofing additive and cure it for seven days before painting.
How to Choose a Main Gate Pillar Design for Home
The pillar must carry the gate first and look good second. A heavy gate on a thin brick pillar will lean and sag within a year or two.
| Gate width | Pillar size | Steel | Footing depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 8 ft | 12 x 12 in | 4 bars, 12 mm | 2.5 to 3 ft |
| 8 to 12 ft | 15 x 15 in | 4 to 6 bars, 12 mm | 3 to 4 ft |
| 12 ft and above | 18 x 18 in or more | 6 to 8 bars, 16 mm | 4 ft or as per engineer |
Cladding adds 2 to 3 inches each side. Plan the finished size so the gate fits the clear opening you need.
What to Tell the Mason and Fabricator
- Cast MS hinge plates or anchor bolts into the pillar at the right heights. Tiles and granite cannot hold a hinge.
- Put a conduit pipe in the pillar for the lamp, bell and camera before casting.
- Keep the hinge side of the pillar plumb within 3 mm, or the gate will swing open or shut on its own.
- Give the top a sloped or stepped cap so water runs off.
- Decide on a name plate spot early so the plate sits flush.
Pillar Care
Wash tiled and granite pillars with plain water. Re-seal stone every two to three years. Repaint plastered pillars with exterior paint when they start to chalk. Check the joint between the pillar and the gate wall every monsoon for hairline cracks. You can see full gates with matching pillars in the main gate design gallery.
Main gate questions
Which is better for main gate pillars, tiles or granite?
Granite lasts longer, does not fade and resists knocks. Tiles cost less and come in more colours. For a pillar that faces rain and road dust, granite or textured outdoor tiles both work well.
What size should a main gate pillar be?
For a gate up to 8 ft wide, a 12 x 12 inch RCC pillar is enough. For 10 to 12 ft gates use at least 15 x 15 inch. Wider or full sheet gates need bigger pillars and an engineer's check.
How do I design the main gate pillar top?
Keep the top sloped or stepped with an overhang and drip groove. Add a lamp, a ball finial or a planter if you like. A flat top without overhang leaves dark rain streaks.
Can I fix gate hinges on a tiled pillar?
Not directly. Hinge plates or bolts must be cast into the RCC core before tiles go on. Screws in tiles will crack them and the gate will sag.
What are good main gate pillar light design ideas?
Pillar top lanterns, up down wall lights and a lit niche are the most common. Use outdoor rated fittings and run wires through a pipe inside the pillar.
Is a simple plastered pillar strong enough?
Yes, if it has an RCC core with proper steel and footing. The plaster is only the finish. A brick only pillar is fine for a light gate up to 8 ft but not for heavy gates.
