A steel main gate design is the low care option for most Indian homes, because good stainless steel does not need paint. This page shows 12 original SS, steel and glass, and steel with wood gates, each with size, grade and finish notes for your fabricator.

Before you choose, know the grades. SS 304 has more nickel and chromium and resists rust in rain, near the sea and in polluted cities. SS 202 looks the same when new and costs less, but it can show brown spots within a year or two outdoors. For a gate, ask for 304 in writing.

If you want a painted gate instead, see iron main gate design or the warmer wooden main gate design page.

SS Main Gate Design in Stainless Steel 304

An SS main gate design needs no paint and stays bright for years if the grade is right. These three use SS 304 pipe and box sections with a brushed or mirror finish.

SS main gate design with brushed stainless steel vertical pipes and flat top rail
Size10 x 6 ft, double
MaterialSS 304, 1.5 in pipe
FinishBrushed (hairline)

Round SS pipes in a brushed finish hide fingerprints and water marks better than mirror polish. A plain choice that suits almost any house colour.

Fabricator tip: Ask for a 304 grade bill and test a pipe with an SS test kit before fitting.

Steel main gate design for home with square tubes and a mirror finish band
Size11 x 6 ft, double
MaterialSS 304, 40x40 tube
FinishBrushed + mirror band

Square tubes with one mirror polished band across the middle give a clean, modern face. The band catches light without making the whole gate shiny.

Fabricator tip: Wall thickness should be at least 1.2 mm; thinner tubes dent and wobble.

Main gate modern steel gate design with horizontal SS flat strips on a sliding leaf
Size13 x 6 ft, sliding
MaterialSS 304 frame + flats
FinishBrushed satin

Flat SS strips laid horizontally make a light sliding gate that does not rust at the bottom like MS can. Good for coastal towns.

Fabricator tip: Use SS or nylon wheels on a grooved track and SS bolts throughout, not plated MS bolts.

Main Gate Glass Design With Steel and Acrylic Panels

A main gate glass design pairs an SS frame with toughened glass or acrylic sheet. It gives privacy with light, and an aluminium main gate design follows the same idea with powder coated profiles.

Steel main gate design with frosted glass panels inside a brushed SS frame
Size10 x 6 ft, double
MaterialSS 304 + 8 mm glass
FinishBrushed, frosted glass

Frosted toughened glass blocks the view but lets daylight reach the porch. Best on a gate that is not hit by passing vehicles.

Fabricator tip: Use only toughened glass with rubber gaskets in an SS channel, and a door closer so the leaf never slams.

Main gate steel design with black acrylic panels and thin SS strips
Size9 x 6 ft, double
MaterialSS 304 + 5 mm acrylic
FinishGloss black, brushed

Black acrylic panels with bright steel strips look smart and are lighter than glass. Acrylic can scratch, so keep it away from the latch side.

Fabricator tip: Leave a 3 mm gap around acrylic sheets for heat movement and fix with SS screws through rubber washers.

Aluminium main gate design with grey profiles and tinted glass upper panels
Size12 x 6 ft, sliding
MaterialAluminium profile
FinishGrey powder coat

Aluminium profiles never rust and weigh far less than steel, so wide gates swing easily. The lower panel is solid, the upper part tinted glass.

Fabricator tip: Ask for heavy section profiles with internal steel reinforcement at the wheel and lock points.

Steel With Wood Finish and Iron and Steel Mix Gates

Steel with a wood look is warm and still easy to clean. A main gate design iron and steel mix keeps cost down by using MS for the frame and SS only where it shows.

Main gate steel gate design with SS frame and wood finish horizontal slats
Size11 x 6.5 ft, double
MaterialSS frame, coated slats
FinishBrushed, teak grain

Brushed steel frame with wood-grain slats gives a homely look on a modern front. The slats are coated metal, so they do not crack or swell.

Fabricator tip: Check the wood-grain coating is outdoor grade, and ask for slat ends sealed to stop water entry.

Main gate design iron and steel mix with black MS frame and SS bars
Size10 x 6 ft, double
MaterialMS 50x50 + SS 304 bars
FinishBlack PU, brushed bars

A black painted MS frame with bright SS bars mixes strength with shine. It costs less than an all-SS gate of the same size.

Fabricator tip: Keep SS and MS apart with an insulating washer or paint barrier so galvanic rust does not start at joints.

GI and steel main gate steel door design with wood texture centre panel
Size12 x 6 ft, double
MaterialGI frame + GI sheet
FinishGrey PU, wood panel

A GI (galvanised iron) sheet gate is cheaper than SS and resists rust well. A wood texture panel at the centre softens the plain grey.

Fabricator tip: Use etch primer on GI before paint; normal primer peels off zinc coating within a year.

Steel Main Gate Design Double Door

Choose a steel gate design double door main gate when the opening is 10 ft or more. Two short leaves sag less than one wide leaf and need less swing space.

Steel main gate design double door with gold PVD bands on brushed steel
Size14 x 7 ft, double
MaterialSS 304, 50x50 tube
FinishBrushed, gold PVD

Gold PVD bands on brushed steel look rich and will not fade like gold paint. Suits a large house with a white or cream front.

Fabricator tip: Ask for PVD on 304 grade only, and protective film kept on until fitting is done.

Main gate steel door design double door with built-in wicket door
Size12 x 6.5 ft, double
MaterialSS 304, 25x25 grid
FinishBrushed satin

A wicket door in one leaf lets you walk in without opening the big gate. The SS grid keeps it light enough for a single hinge side.

Fabricator tip: Frame the wicket door separately with its own 3 hinges and a stopper so it does not twist the main leaf.

Modern single steel gate design for a narrow house front
Size7 x 6 ft, single
MaterialSS 304, 40x20 tube
FinishBrushed, black handle

A single SS leaf works on a narrow plot where a double gate would look cramped. Keep the width under 8 ft so it does not sag.

Fabricator tip: Use 4 heavy hinges and a wheel at the free end if the leaf is wider than 6 ft.

SS 304 vs 202 vs MS: Which Main Gate Design Steel Option to Pick

MaterialRustCareBest for
SS 304Very lowWash with waterCoast, cities, low care homes
SS 202Spots over timeWipe and polish oftenIndoor or covered gates
MS paintedRusts if paint breaksRepaint every 3 to 4 yearsTight budget, any design

SS work is usually priced by area or by running foot of section, not by weight like MS. Glass, PVD colour, hinges, wheels, lock and fitting are added on top. Our price guide shows how to compare quotes line by line.

What to Tell the Fabricator for a Steel Main Gate Design for Home

  • Write the grade (304) and the tube wall thickness (1.2 mm or more) on the quote.
  • Ask for TIG welding with joints ground and buffed to match the finish.
  • Use SS hinges, SS bolts and SS or nylon wheels. One MS bolt will leave a rust streak.
  • Keep a 40 to 50 mm gap at the bottom for water to drain.
  • For a laser cut steel panel inside the gate, see CNC laser cut main gate ideas.

Clean SS with plain water and a soft cloth. Never use steel wool or acid toilet cleaners on it; they leave scratches where rust can start.

Main gate questions

Is a steel main gate design better than an iron gate?

SS 304 needs almost no care and will not rust, while iron needs primer and repainting. Iron is cheaper and easier to shape into any pattern. Many homes now pick a main gate steel gate design for the front and keep iron for side gates.

How do I check if my SS main gate design uses 304 grade?

Ask for a mill test or a written bill showing 304. A simple SS test kit or a magnet helps too: 304 is almost non-magnetic, while 202 often pulls slightly. Check a few pieces, not just one.

Is a main gate design iron and steel mix a good idea?

Yes, it is a smart way to save cost. Use a painted MS frame for strength and SS bars or bands where they show. Just keep the two metals separated with paint or washers at joints.

Is an aluminium main gate design strong enough?

For a home gate up to 12 ft, heavy aluminium profiles with steel reinforcement at wheels and lock points work well. They are light and never rust. For a gate that may be hit by vehicles, steel is stronger.

Which steel main gate design double door size suits a car?

For a small car, 9 to 10 ft clear width is fine. For an SUV that has to turn in from a narrow road, go for 11 to 12 ft. Each leaf is half the width, which keeps hinges and pillars from carrying too much load.

Does a main gate glass design break easily?

Toughened glass is several times stronger than normal glass, and if it breaks it falls in small blunt pieces. Fix it in rubber gaskets and fit a closer so the leaf does not slam. Keep glass in the upper half if vehicles pass close.
