Main gate light design decides how the gate looks after dark, and the lock and handle decide how it feels every day. These small parts are often bought in a hurry at the end of the job, but they get used more than any other part of the gate.

Below are close-up ideas for pillar lamps, wall lights, locks, latches, handles and hinges, each with a note for the fabricator or electrician. Plan the wiring and lock box while the gate and pillars are still being made.

Lamps sit on pillars, so read our pillar design page too. For a blank plate to go beside the lights, see name plate designs.

Main Gate Light Design for Pillars

Pillar top lamps are the classic main gate lamp design. They mark the entrance from far away and light the driveway. Run the wire through a conduit inside the pillar while it is being built, not later.

Main gate lamp design with a black lantern and clear glass on a pillar top
SizeLamp 10 x 18 in
MaterialCast alu + glass
FinishMatt black

A square black lantern on each pillar is the safe classic choice. Clear glass throws more light than frosted on the driveway.

Fabricator tip: Ask the mason to leave a 25 mm conduit up the pillar centre and a bolt plate on the cap.

Modern main gate light design with a white globe lamp on a grey pillar
SizeGlobe 10 in dia
MaterialOpal acrylic, alu base
FinishWhite, dark grey

A plain opal globe gives soft, even light with no glare in the eyes. It fits a modern house with a flat roof.

Fabricator tip: Use an outdoor rated globe with a rubber seal, and an IP65 junction box inside the cap.

House main gate light design with hidden LED strip lines on a stone pillar
SizePillar 2 x 8 ft
MaterialAlu channel + LED
FinishWarm white 3000K

Warm strip light hidden in grooves washes the stone and looks smart without any lamp fitting showing.

Fabricator tip: Cut 12 mm grooves in the cladding, use aluminium channels with a cover, and keep drivers inside.

Main Gate Wall Light Design

Wall lights go on the compound wall beside the gate or on the inner face of the pillar. A good main gate wall light design throws light down onto the lock and the path, so you can see the keyhole at night.

Main gate wall light design with a black up and down cylinder light
SizeLight 4 x 8 in
MaterialAluminium body
FinishBlack powder coat

Up and down beams draw two lines of light on the wall and still light the path below. Suits plain plaster or textured paint.

Fabricator tip: Fix at 6 ft height, one on each side of the gate, and seal the cable entry with silicone.

Main gate light design for home with an antique brass wall lantern
SizeLantern 8 x 14 in
MaterialBrass-tone metal, glass
FinishAntique brass

An antique brass wall lantern matches a traditional gate with gold tips. The cage protects the glass from knocks.

Fabricator tip: Choose a lantern with a wall plate wider than the junction box, and mount it on a solid surface.

Low step light set into the gate wall to light the driveway entry
SizeLight 4 x 3 in
MaterialDie-cast alu, louver
FinishDark grey

Small recessed lights low on the wall light the ground near the gate without any glare. Good for a sloping ramp.

Fabricator tip: Set the back box during plastering, 1 ft above ground, with a drip edge over the louver.

Main Gate Lock Design and Latches

The lock is the part people use every day, so it must be easy to work from both sides. An iron main gate lock design usually has a lock box welded to the leaf, plus a drop bolt and tower bolt to hold the second leaf.

Iron main gate lock design with a welded black lock box and round knob
SizeLock box 6 x 8 in
MaterialMS box, rim lock
FinishBlack PU

A boxed lock welded into the leaf is neat and hard to pry open. Keep the key side facing out and the knob side inside.

Fabricator tip: Make the lock box from 16 gauge sheet with a drain hole at the bottom and a removable back cover.

Main gate kundi design with a heavy sliding latch and padlock ring
SizeLatch 10 in long
MaterialMS round bar, flat
FinishBlack enamel

A sliding kundi with a padlock ring is simple, cheap and works for years in villages and farm houses.

Fabricator tip: Use a 16 mm round bar latch, weld the keeper to the frame not the bars, and add a padlock eye.

Main gate drop bolt and tower bolt holding the fixed leaf of a double gate
SizeBolt 18 in drop
MaterialMS rod + socket
FinishBlack, steel socket

A long drop bolt into a floor socket holds the fixed leaf firmly, so the lock on the other leaf cannot be forced.

Fabricator tip: Set an SS pipe socket in the floor for the drop bolt, and keep it clear of mud with a cap.

Main Gate Handle Design and Hinges

A good modern main iron gate handle design is comfortable to grip and has no sharp edges. Hinges are just as important: the main gate hinges design decides whether the gate swings smoothly or sags.

Modern main gate handle design with a long brushed steel pull bar
SizeHandle 24 in long
MaterialSS 304, 25 mm round
FinishBrushed steel

A long pull bar is easy to grab from a car window and looks clean on a slatted gate. SS will not rust in the hand area.

Fabricator tip: Bolt the handle through with SS bolts and backing plates so it does not tear out of thin sheet.

Main iron gate handle design with a forged ring pull on a black plate
SizeRing 5 in dia
MaterialForged MS, back plate
FinishBlack, rust sealer

A forged ring handle suits traditional and wooden gates. The back plate spreads the load on the leaf.

Fabricator tip: Weld the back plate fully, then seal with a clear rust sealer since hands rub off paint here.

Main gate hinges design with a heavy ball bearing hinge welded to the pillar plate
SizeHinge 6 in, 25 mm pin
MaterialMS hinge, bearing
FinishBlack, greased

Ball bearing hinges carry heavy leaves without dropping. Three per leaf is right for gates over 6 ft tall.

Fabricator tip: Use 25 mm pin ball bearing hinges, weld the plate to pillar steel, and add a grease nipple.

Choosing Gate Lights, Locks and Handles

LockLock box + drop boltWorks from both sides
HandleSS pull or forged ringThrough bolted, no sharp edges

Match the metal finish of lamps and handles to the gate. Gold lamps on a black gate look good; mixing gold, silver and bronze does not. See gate colour ideas.

Wiring, Rust and Care

  • Use outdoor rated fittings and a separate MCB for gate lights, with a timer or dusk sensor.
  • Lay wires in conduit inside the pillar; never clip them on the outside.
  • Grease hinges and the lock every few months. Spray a little oil in the keyhole before the monsoon.
  • Near the sea, choose SS 304 handles and bolts and powder coated lamps.
  • For a light under the gate chajja or arch, use a sealed downlight.

Cost for these parts is usually listed separately from the gate weight on a fabricator's quote, so check each item by count and type.

Main gate questions

Which main gate light design for home gives the best light?

A pillar lamp with clear glass on each side, plus a wall light near the lock, covers both the driveway and the keyhole. Warm white light looks softer and draws fewer insects.

What is the safest main iron gate lock design?

A welded lock box on one leaf and a drop bolt into the floor on the other. The drop bolt stops the pair being pushed apart. Add a padlock eye for when you travel.

What size should a main gate handle design be?

A pull bar of 18 to 24 inches suits most double gates, and a 5 inch ring or lever handle suits single leaves. Keep the handle at about 3.5 ft height.

How many hinges does a main gate need?

Two for leaves up to 5 ft tall and light, three for heavier or taller leaves. Ball bearing hinges with a grease point last longest.

Is a main gate kundi design still useful?

Yes. A strong sliding kundi with a padlock eye is simple and needs no key. Many owners use it with a lock box, the kundi for night and travel.

Can I add lights to an existing gate?

Yes, but cutting a groove for wires in a finished pillar is messy. A wall light with a surface conduit or a solar pillar lamp is easier on an old gate.
